The matting paper (Aburatorigami) has been used for more than 300 years by gold craftsmen to keep the leaves from getting wet. 

These are indeed intended for the construction of screens and temples in Imperial Japan.

Later, this paper was rediscovered for its natural properties by the Geishas in the 17th century.

Indeed, this precious product allows them to keep their make-up intact throughout the years, by absorbing excess sebum.
